Judging Competitions

To begin with, it is important to point out that judges in ballroom dancing have no set framework for judging of the competitions. Most commonly, judges use their experience to evaluate which couples, in their opinion, best embody the essential elements of the particular dance. The following factors usually help them to make their choice among the competitors:

Timing and Musicality

Dancing not only in time with the music, but also using the timing to add power and speed to the performance. Different dances have different musical accents in their rythms, which sould be observed to properly portray the character of each dance.

Posture and Poise

A good posture contributes to balance (and therefore control of body movement), and the ability to synchronise body weights between the two partners. It is very important to maintain correct posture throughout the performance to look confident and aestetically pleasing.

Connection and Hold

Often referred to as "lead and follow". The ability of the leader to initiate the movement and serve as the source of power and the ability of the follower to understand the signal and respond by amplifying the power that was received.

Togetherness

Two people should be dancing as one whole, achieving the "flow" or harmony of their movements through synchronization of their body weights.

Presentation

Grooming, enthusiasm, and ability to "capture the audience".

Foot and Leg Action

Foot and leg action are the foundation upon which a dancer builds the complete picture that they project to a judge and the audience.

Floorcraft

Not only the ability of avoid collisions with other competitors, but the ability to adapt choreography as difficult situations are encountered on the competition floor.

Ability to Attract Attention

Particularly important in the rounds with a lot of couples. Because the judge sees each couple for only a few seconds, anything that draws the attention, either positively or negatively, could be the deciding factor for the markings.
